In a very noisy start to its Comic-Con presentation, Paramount stirred up the crowd at Hall H on Thursday with footage from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

On to the stage came Megan Fox, a Comic-Con favourite, and Will Arnett, who play reporters. They were joined by the film's director, Jonathan Liebesman and the producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller.

In a wonderful moment for the faithful among the crowd, the studio also invited up Kevin Eastman, one of the original creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

There was footage galore. The assembled throng not only got to see a subway hostage crisis involving those age-old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles baddies the Foot Clan, but were also treated to the moment when Fox's character gets in a little over her head on first encountering the turtles.

Liebesman explained that he wanted to give the Foot Clan a new look for the film. "To make it believable in today's world they have to be trained in a paramilitary way," he said. "They have to be formidable."

Eastman also let everyone in on a little history, explaining how he came up with the name Shredder for the arch-villain. It turns out he was doing the dishes one day when he slipped and grazed his arm on a cheese grater; so an idea was born. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens on 8 August.

Next up was footage from the time-travel thriller Project Almanac. The director, Dean Israelite – coincidentally the younger cousin of Liebesman – urged fans to see a Thursday night preview of the film in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, adjacent to the Convention Centre. The movie opens in early 2015.

Paramount also sneaked in a cacophonous clip from The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, which opens in early 2015, and a trailer from Hot Tub Time Machine 2, which will be out in December in the UK and US.
