Age has not withered ABC's effervescent 1982 debut album The Lexicon of Love, but it has certainly done a job on their videos, which leave the 21st-century viewer reeling. Initally, ABC mounted a concerted effort to make the world's campest video, an ambition finally realised on The Look of Love, which features lederhosen, roller skates and critic Paul Morley, tragically not simultaneously.

A year on, they returned, politicised, in designer blousons with stern nuclear imagery, rock guitars and the expressions of men slowly realising they had cocked things up. By 1984, they had recruited a tiny, bald, bespectacled guitarist and literally turned themselves into cartoon characters. Then label bosses clearly had a quiet word and glossy, dreary normality set in.
