Takers is a slick, shallow heist film that has a near-identical plot to last week's excellent The Town: an honest cop doggedly pursues a gang of highly sophisticated bank and armoured car robbers in the hope that eventually one of their meticulously planned jobs will go wrong. Which naturally it does. The difference is that Ben Affleck's The Town is deeply rooted in Boston and gives a persuasive depth to its characters. Takers could be set anywhere (the producers admit to having written versions in New York, Asia and San Francisco before settling on Los Angeles), it's about people with quirks and habits rather than personalities, and it rarely stops to think or reflect.
