Director Bernard Rose describes himself as an "enthusiastic plagiarist", and this overreaching horror movie is a magpie's nest of scary images past and present - from Hammer horror to Abu Ghraib to internet voyeurism. It's one of those "Is this real or a movie?" movies, centring on a horror director named Boris Arkadin (Jeroen Krabbé) whose wife is murdered by a Manson-like cult - an event that he decides to restage years later, using unsuspecting actors and hidden video cameras. Rather than building to a climax of terror, it simply becomes preposterous, though, since the base level of "reality" is never plausible in the first place.
