Anyone wishing to fire accusations of laziness at the TV industry has another clip of ammo. Following Gotham, Minority Report, School of Rock, Big and others, there’s yet another film-to-TV adaptation in the works: Hitch, a reboot of the 2005 Will Smith romcom about a smooth relationship guru who becomes a klutz around a woman he’s trying to impress.
Fox is developing the project with Smith on board as an executive producer. It will be penned by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, the crack romcom team who have written Made of Honour, Leap Year, and an in-development film version of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. They’re also writing Tuned, a musical comedy for US network NBC.
It’s the latest attempt to capitalise further on the success of the film, which grossed $368m worldwide. Sony and Smith’s company Overbrook tried to develop a TV spinoff first in 2007 with CBS, then again in 2010 with Fox.
It’s the second US reboot in a week, with plans for an adaptation of Marley & Me also recently announced. The comic weepie, starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, was adapted from John Grogan’s novel about a couple’s trials with a disobediant dog; the new TV version for NBC will follow them a few years on, complete with new puppy and teenage sons.
