Eye-achingly cheap-looking but enjoyable account of an odd-couple friendship between teenagers from two of Japan's girl tribes. 17-year-old Momoko (Kyoko Fukada) is a Lolita, the Rococo-obsessed girls who dress up in lace and ruffles, who befriends a "yanki" biker chick (Anna Tsuchiya). Based on a cult novel, this is giddy fun for Japanese teens, though it's a pity that by the end the rest of us are none the wiser about the country's kitschy subcultures - kids who swap the conformity of their parents for identical shop-bought rebellion. Still, it finishes with a bloody, teeny-Tarantino showdown next to a giant Buddha statue.
