Robert Carlyle is on strong form in this sober, gritty piece about friendship and regret. He plays a man on a drab council estate who cares for his wheelchair-bound, foul-mouthed mate, Daz. Initially it's as if Ken Loach has directed a Little Britain sketch but Carlyle's simmering dignity draws you in as the action flashes back to a sunlit summer when he and Daz ran young and free, with a motorbike and a girl named Katy. Kenny Glenaan directs with gentle precision, and there's fine work from cinematographer Tony Slater-Ling.
