The Merry Gentleman

Michael Keaton directs himself as a hitman saved by Scots lassie Kelly Macdonald, writes Philip French

In his watchable directorial debut, Keaton plays a depressed hitman in Chicago who is saved from suicide in the days before Christmas by a big-hearted Scottish girl (Kelly Macdonald) on the run from her abusive husband. Coincidence follows coincidence as the taciturn Keaton forms an odd relationship with Macdonald, and she attracts a sad, overweight cop who is trailing Keaton. There are undercurrents of a Catholic kind about grace and redemption.
