The one film to emerge from this year’s Cannes film festival as a surefire Oscar contender was Todd Haynes’s period romance Carol.

Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, the film received almost universally positive reviews, including five stars from The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, who called it “outstandingly intelligent”.

The first trailer has now emerged, giving a closer look at the awards-tipped film. It stars Cate Blanchett as a woman in a loveless marriage who falls for a department store clerk, played by Rooney Mara. Mara picked up the award for best actress at Cannes and is an early favourite, along with Blanchett, for further success at next year’s Oscars.

The film will receive its UK premiere at this year’s London film festival, after showing at both Cannes and New York film festivals. It marks the first of two films starring Cate Blanchett in this year’s Oscar race, alongside her role in fact-based drama Truth opposite Robert Redford. Mara will also appear in this October’s big-budget fantasy Pan.

  • Carol will hit US cinemas on 20 November, open in the UK on 27 November and in Australia in January 2016
