A feisty/scary Jane Fonda provides the best reason to check out this overcooked fam-dram, adapted by screenwriter Jonathan Tropper from his own novel, which finds a dysfunctional brood reunited for seven days of Shiva hell in the wake of their father’s death. Fonda plays populist psychologist Hillary Altman, who cashed in on motherhood (and her squabbling children’s private lives) through the bestseller Cradle and All. Forced into each other’s company, Judd (Jason Bateman), Phillip (Adam Driver) and Wendy (Tina Fey) find old wounds, loves and rivalries reopened with predictably bittersweet consequences. There are a few enjoyable moments, with Fey and Fonda making you wish they had a movie of their own, but sadly the narrative is more concerned with the boys, whose relationship crises are altogether more formulaic and less interesting.
