Philip French

McCabe and Mrs Miller

Philip French: A truly great western.

Back in a new print, Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs Miller is a truly great western (unlike the Great Western, which is merely an unpopular railway line). A bleak, beautifully mounted, elegiac film, it was shot in 1971 on sets erected in British Columbia largely by young Americans fleeing from the Vietnam War, the futility of which Altman had demonstrated the previous year in M*A*S*H.
