Hawking – review

An original and affectionate character study about the Cambridge polymath, says Mark Kermode

Cosmologist, genius, pop celebrity, Simpsons character, action figure; the extraordinary Stephen Hawking is all of these and more. Although his triumph-of-the-mind story has been told before in both docs and dramatisations, this offers the polymath's tale in his own words – witty, engaging, playful, and irrepressibly inquiring. The evident affection and respect of those around him is uplifting, but it's the professor's distinctive narrator's voice which captures the attention, as it guides the viewer toward the very edges of time and space.
