This September, Guardian Cities will be collaborating with the Barbican Centre in London on City Visions, a season of films, talks and debates, exploring the ways in which cinema has engaged with the phenomenon of the modern city and the experience of urban life.

As part of this, we are launching a global competition for anyone with a passion for capturing their city on film. We’re looking for the best three-minute city films, of any genre, made on anything from a professional camera to an iPhone. Whether it’s a documentary-style exploration of urban life, a drama or comedy (or horror?) set against the cityscape, or even your own “city symphony”, get filming!

To enter, share your short city film with GuardianWitness by hitting the ‘contribute to this article’ button above: the deadline for submissions was 31 August 2014 but this has been extended until 3 September as a grace period for those still attempting to submit. The three best films will be chosen by a panel of Guardian Cities and Barbican staff, and the film-makers will be contacted on 15 September 2014.

The three winning films will be shown at a special Guardian Cities screening at the Barbican on Saturday 27 September 2014. They will also feature on the Guardian Cities site.

We look forward to seeing your films!
