Noah Baumbach has enlisted LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy to create the soundtrack to his new film, While We're Young. Following his 2010 collaboration with the director for the film Greenberg, the now retired frontman will work on the score to his next release, according to the Film Stage.

The director's forthcoming film stars Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts, as well as Amanda Seyfried, Adam Driver, Charles Grodin and Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys and is said to follow "a middle-aged couple whose career and marriage are overturned when a disarming young couple enters their lives".

This isn't Murphy's only dalliance with the world of cinema since his last collaboration with Baumbach. Shut Up and Play the Hits, a documentary about the band's last show, played at Madison Square Garden, was released in 2012. The songwriter, DJ and producer also made a cameo in 2012's The Comedy, starring Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim.

While We're Young should be an opportunity for mourning LCD fans to hear the artist back in action – if he approaches it with the same mind-set as his Greenberg score. After Greenberg's release, Murphy spoke of his time writing the individual tracks used in the film at his Los Angeles home studio.

"Noah and I had a good talk about not making a score but making songs. I tend to not like scores. I like old scores that are very specific but, typically, contemporary scores drive me crazy," he told Pitchfork. "It's the musical equivalent of a poetry slam – just mood tones and spacey surround-sound shit. So I wrote a bunch of songs that are not directly about the movie but are like the songs that we would pick out of our record collections to illustrate the movie."

In the past few months, Murphy been involved in a number of other creative endeavours, such as Subway Symphony, a proposed musical project for the New York subway system, and a collaboration with craft coffee company Blue Bottle to develop a coffee blend.

LCD Soundsystem's third and final album was entitled This Is Happening. It was released in 2010.
